(exodus 4:2-9). several specific things were given as signs, such as the rainbow (genesis 9:12-13); some of the feasts (exodus 13:9); the sabbath (exodus 31:13) and circumcision (romans 4:11). often, extraordinary events were given as a sign to insure faith or demonstrate authority. when christ was born, the place of his birth and his dress were to be signs of his identity to the shepherds. when the scribes and the pharisees asked jesus for a sign, he assured them that no sign was to be given them except the sign of jonah, whose experience in the fish was to portray christ’s burial and resurrection. signs confirming the gospel message of our lord jesus christ: jesus christ himself said in john 4:48 that, except some see signs and wonders, they will not believe. why? because, the gospel message, to many people, is too simplistic to be taken seriously. for instance, common sense says the more you give, the less you have whereas jesus says, the more you give, the more you have. (luke 6:38; acts 20:35). hence, it takes a miracle to transform a man from the mode of salvation by works to the mode of salvation by grace. consequently, signs are god’s way of turning unbelieving men’s heart to himself thereby confirming christianity is real and not imagination or some sorts of mere religion. saul’s conversion on his way to persecute believers in damascus is a typical example of conversion through signs and wonders. (acts 9: 1-9). when do signs occur? signs regularly occur to confirm that the gospel message of jesus is real and that it is the power of god. (romans 1:16). the gospel is miraculous. hence, those who are born again should appreciate god for what they have and not to take it for granted. after all, there are many people who are better and wiser than us who reject the gospel to their own peril. the gospel message sounds stupid to them even though it is the determining factor on the last day as to where they will spend eternity. (john 3:3; acts 4:12; 1corinthians 1: 25-29). when the integrity of god is at stake. e.g. sennacherib (king of assyrian) and his army experienced the wrath of god when they berated him (god). (2chronicles 32:9, 13, 15, 16, 17, 21, 23). when the holy spirit is lied to/against. ananias and sapphira dropped dead for lying against the holy spirit. (acts 5:1-12). when the life of a faithful servant of god is in danger in the hands of the enemies of christ. god will do anything to defend his children. he says, “…touch not my anointed and do my prophets no harm.” psalm 105: 14, 15. whoever touches the anointed of god does so to their peril. when trying to interrupt or obstruct the gospel message. e.g. when he tried to, elymas (the sorcerer) or bar-jesus was summarily dealt with. (acts 13: 6-12). when a believer’s life is in danger and god decides to intervene. e.g. peter was delivered miraculously from the hand of murderous king herod. (acts 12: 1-11). to demonstrate the almightiness of god that he can do as he pleases. (daniel 4:33-35). what are the implications of signs following? salvation of many more souls. jesus declared, “the harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few...” (matthew 9:37-38). this statement is more apt in our time and age where you now have many false teachers of the word, who, all in the name of multimedia try to confuse many people thereby leading them out of the church. these must be stopped through signs. joy. there was joy in samaria following confirmation of the gospel through signs following. (acts 8:6-13). conviction of sin. the wages of sin still remain death regardless of how people classify sin. e.g. refer to ananias and sapphira’s case. acts 5:1-12. according to jesus, without signs and wonders some will not believe. in other words, signs authenticate the gospel in many cases. (john 4:48) conclusion: the onus lies on us to go and preach the gospel message of jesus. if we do not go, the greater works promised by jesus in john 14:12 will not be done. “it is god who works in us both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (philippians 2:3). our part is to obey while god’s part is to confirm. it is our duty to believe the word of god and to apply it at the right time. some signs or miracles will not occur except we play our part. jesus said, “this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” (matthew 17:21). “forever, o lord, thy word is settled in heaven.” (psalms 119:89). god gives the power, but we must believe and u se it.
